The dream of building the Sri Siva Vishnu Temple (SSVT) originated in 1976 and the SSVT trust was formed in January of 1980. It was decided to combine the concepts of Siva and Vishnu under one roof and to incorporate various temple architectural styles which are all based on the Vastu Sastras which reflect time, by conversion of time into linear and space measures. The Murugan Temple of North America was established in August 1982 and the new temple building was inaugurated on May 29, 1999. Rajdhani Mandir is a nonprofit religious and cultural organization, founded in 1985 with the main objective of preserving and promoting Hindu culture and religion. Durga Temple of Greater Springfield (VA) was established in 1991 to promote and flourish the richness of the Hindu religion, culture, and philosophy. In addition, Durga Temple provides an opportunity for community members to learn and display the many characteristics of Hinduism through participation in religious and cultural programs and various other activities. Chinmaya Mission was founded about 40 years ago by the initial followers of H.H. Swami Chinmayananda. Under the guidance of Swami Chinmayananda the Mission has grown into a world-wide spiritual and social organization with almost 150 centers, 11 of which are in the U.S. and Canada. The ISKCON temple in Potomac is the oldest Vaishnava temple in the Washington/Maryland area. The presiding deities of Sri Radha Madana Mohana were officially established in 1972 at the original ISKCON temple on Q Street, Washington DC., before being moved to Potomac in 1975.
